There
something about Cam that makes him feel new to the world. Though a man in his
fifties there’s something almost childlike and innocent about this character,
but he is far from naive. He’s learned to navigate the realities of the world
around him and survive hidden in plain sight. Everything about this character
is evocative and cranks up my empathy to painful levels.
Juxtaposing
gender, community and orientation, perhaps it is age and similarities in
ethnicity that makes me feel his story as true. Perhaps it’s the politics of
the world at large spiraling out of control and the microcosm of two fictional
characters, Cam and Dave, becomes a balm.
Cam’s
journey to be true to himself, his excursion into a life he could have had,
mixed liberally with flashbacks to the life he led – is beautiful and
heartbreaking. Heartbreakingly beautiful are not words joined together in a
good way, but this story – like many other stories – is filled with words
joined together. Only these words ultimately create something beautiful … and heartbreaking.
