Timeless ... (Someday It Will Be)

Someday It Will Be

Life is filled with crappy days; sometimes they spill into each other for years at a stretch. So when people feed themselves lies to mollify or numb the sensation, I want to scream. Get over yourself, it’s just another crappy day. But sometimes, for a moment – for the suspension of disbelief we can smile, laugh or cry.

Poe stumbles into that moment walking in a cold Chicago alley and then inexplicably tumbling down a sand dune. The Twilight Zone of his life begins with the discovery of what one person would do – could give, for a chance at love. The story is told from Poe’s point of view, but looking over his shoulder we discover Isaac. He is everything Poe thought him to be and more. His “someday,” wasn’t an existential moment of left or right, but over a decade of shaping the world – “Lathes of Heaven” be damned.

And I smiled a little and cried more than I’d willingly care to admit. David Gerrold once wrote about how you needed to immerse the characters in genuine emotions when you threw away the realm of reality. S.A. McAuley did that and more. For anyone who’s ever read Peter David’s “Imzadi,” this tale is timeless and beautiful and made me cry – life with one less crappy moment. Thank you.
