Life On Mars and Other Such Anomalies (The Martian)

The Martian

Indomitable. I love that word. It’s a great word, but really when do we get to use it? When is it applicable? On more than one occasion I’ve had an uncooperative bottle top, figuratively (because keeping a weary eye on a bottle top for signs of life likens me to some fictitious astronaut and his Pathfinder – though that’s not entirely a bad thing – except the fictitious part – well and some of the other parts as well) kick my a—posterior. That said I’d hardly call the bottle top indomitable.

Still there are times when a character can have qualities that we all secretly hope define the human spirit. Andy Weir’s Mark Watney is one such character. He faces adversity after adversity and keeps trucking on. He’s not confronted with dystopia, totalitarianism, alien invasion, zombie hordes or even super villains. His botany powers (the ability to grow potatoes) notwithstanding, he is no superhero. But he’s special.
