New York Christmas
R.J. Scott
I’m a native New Yorker, live in Manhattan and
hate tall buildings. It’s a catch 22 (non Heller). The Heights make it easier
(read Sandra Cisneros’ “Those Who Don’t” it’s a much more eloquent explanation
than any I can offer). So, I read this story and seriously I couldn’t feel New
York.
The
only real New York moment in this story was the tree at Rockefeller Center and
the skating rink in Central Park and honestly I never even knew there was an event
for the first lighting—so not my New York. But, here’s the thing, the story is
not so much about setting as it is about people. In maintaining the setting as
an extraneous separate element I was better able to appreciate the character.
So, if you’re from New York, let that stuff slide, if you’re not—enjoy. I’m not
sure there’s a difference.
