Magic has always been of the slide of hand variety for me, but
there are magical moments that defy explanation—that’s a good
thing. Sometimes and I know it’s hard to explain, it really is in the
smile of a child. I don’t know what to tell you, the movie Madam X
still makes me cry and it doesn’t even have to be Lana Turner, even
with a remake I’m balling my eyes out. It’s always that relationship
between the parent and the child that I’m drawn to first.
It’s the mother in me. It’s the daughter in me. It’s me.
I can still hear my mother’s voice in my head and the excite-
ment when she told me that Chris was Piper and Leo’s son. As The
Fray sing about How to Save a Life and Chris traveled back in time to
stop his brother from becoming evil I discovered magic. But it isn’t
something new, there has always been magic in the love of family.
I’ll be honest with you, I have peripheral knowledge of the be- hind the scenes machinations of the cast of Charmed. I know that there was stuff in the tabloids and on entertainment TV, but for me it was like background noise and I really didn’t pay attention and I really don’t care. When I’m exposed to something artistic I want the piece to stand on its own apart from the juicy (don’t make me gag) gossip. I’ve long since outgrown the distraction of watch this hand while the other hand lies. Giving more credence to the story of the genesis of the piece doesn’t add depth; it only implies that without that back-story the piece has no depth.
So for whatever reason, outside of the scope of fiction, Shannen Doherty was out and her fictional counterpart Prue Halliwell
was dead. And I didn’t watch either hand; I shrugged my shoulder
and kept trudging along waiting and watching the magic. For me
the magic returned when Chris turned out to be Wyatt’s little
brother, well I wanted that story to go on forever.
Writing my fan fiction story to feature the two brothers and to momentarily resurrect Prue I did just for me and perhaps my mother. I think my mother would have liked this story.
